    Default Can Black Holes Split?

If the momentum is such ... would it be possible for an EH to split into two seperate black holes?

Say for example two black holes came within 1.5 r of each other but the momentum was such that after merging momentarily they parted ways back into 2 seperate black holes ... OR is it that once black hole merged they will always be merged?

Within 1.5 radius, they would most definitely merge. At that distance, the escape velocity would exceed the speed of light and there would not be enough momentum that the matter could achieve to escape eachothers pull.

But at a far greater distance, black holes can orbit eachother in the same way as a binary star or as a system, with one black hole in orbit around a more massive black hole.

Once both masses are drawn together, though- It's all over. Resistance is futile. Yummy crunchy munchies and run like all hell if you're too close to the event.

ETA: When I first saw the title, I thought it asked if Black Holes can spit.
Here I was, fingers poised to launch into a tirade about Hawking slobber and the ejection if particles of anti-spittle when I realized that my sick and twisted brain did it to me again.
The other was a billboard around here advertising cable T.V. that said "click it all you want" and I read, "dick it all you want."

I really need some mental floss.

hehehe...I have the same problem with LHC....for some reason I want to call it Large HARDON...

If a Large Hardon Collider is what you're looking for, you need to travel to Greece, not Switzerland.

You guys really do crack me up at times. Thanks ever so much for the laughs. :-)

I assure you, it is well compensated by the many laughs you provide as well.

Maybe someday, you'll provide them on purpose!

    Nah... I'm just joshin' ya.

Well, you may be just joshin', but it is in fact true. My ignorance is quite laughable and I am O.K. with that, very self secure here. Humility is one of my strongest characteristics and I actually think one of my strengths. I certainly have my own way of looking at things. One of my favorite co-worker's standard responses to my off beat sense of insight or humor is to say, "you're so retarded!" It makes me and her both smile and laugh, and laughter they say, is the best medicine. I don't mind playing the fool if it brings a little cheer.

I think Neverfly, that your contributions are far more valuable to me (and others) than most typical PC responses. Even when mean, you usually make a point and provide a challenge which can help a person overcome ignorance, so long as they don't let personal pride or indignance become a hindrance. Not that you so much inspire thought, more like you provoke it. And though it may not work for some, it works for me and I appreciate it. So rave on friend, rave on.... :-)

I can outdo ya easy--- Try trying to talk all smart and then find out you had it all bass ackwards as I do
Happens to me all the time. My bonehead usually finds out when I'm ignorant the hard way.

Eh.. oh ya and what do you all think of this idea then.. That a Black Hole might rotate very rapidly,

but that to split it must have radial velocity to create a force grater than c. is hardly likely... Which might suggest it could not happen.

The universe is a little more complicated than that.. I am drawn to say, I do not know.
