    Default Hello world

I have a basic, military issued, overview of "algebra based" physics, but am quite taken by the subject as a whole due in part to Brian Greene's book "The Fabric of the Cosmos". I need a sounding board. Real people I can bounce the things that make sense to me off, just to make sure they make sense to them too. I've never taken a class, but i've "sat in" on lectures by Feynman, and have "listened" to Hawking expound on concepts. I hope i'm not too much of a bother for those who have received formal training, and i hope to find kin with those who allow their mind to float along, across the universe.

As someone who lacks formal training on such things, you most likely will not be a bother to me

    Welcome aboard, Serum17!

    Welcome to the forums, Serum17!
As for those whose curiosities fall along more fanciful lines, I suggest it's because they have more money than they know what to do with while not having had enough science and engineering to know what they're dealing with.

    Hi Serum17,

This is my introductory message to the group. I stumbled on the group tonight and thought I might try to lend a helping hand. Frankly, I think this will be a short visit to the group, but we'll see. I don't give up easily. Anyway, I knew Richard Feynman. He was an amazing mind. What a personality. And then there is Hawking--not so much. He is very egotistical, something that Feynman definitely was not. And Feynman was the much better physicist. Hawking is a good physicist, but given too much praise because of his physical condition. Not to take anything away from Hawking, because he has done amazing work, but there is an over-done love affair of the American people with Hawking primarily because of his disability. I ask you, why do you think Hawking is so great? What are his great contributions? What sets him apart from other modern physicists (that probably you don't know)? He's in a wheelchair. That's the primary difference. I don't disrespect his contributions, but no body publicizes the more significant and substantial contributions of other scientists because this is simply not news. It's not done by someone in a wheelchair. Lecture over. Now that aside, what, if anything, can I help with? My general intro to the group is given below.

    My very best,

    Rick

    Hi All,

Stepping in here. I think I will leave this group soon as I think I won't fit in. I am a PhD astrophysicist. Just looking around to see what's going on. You will find I have strong, science guided opinions. I pride myself at not being closed to new ideas, but I am demanding in my need for reasons to believe this or that. This is also true of my own beliefs. Really, it make it hard to be accepting of most stuff. Is this a failing? Is this a disadvantage in life? Some tell me so, but I think not. Let's see what people have to say here. You will find me patient. I am willing to offer opinion and listen to that of others. Hello, everyone!

    Rick
