Thanks Tom for the welcome.

My name is Steve, and I am a land surveyor who recently retired after 30plus years in private practice. My specialties included law and hi-order control surveys using GPS.

My hobby has always been antiques, and now it is also the career for my "golden years" as I have opened a small antiques shop here in New Philadelphia, Ohio.

What is this about? -1 + 1 = 0. First equation. So? This is the second thread I've seen with this. Not trying to be mean or trivial. I'm just trying to understand what this is about. And the first equations has nothing to do with 2-D linear transformations. So I am so confused. And certainly the first equation is an equation of scalars. The second is one of 2x2 matrices. So they are as different as night and day. So what is meant by this post? And while the second equation is correct, if you replaced Pi^2/3 with any other number it would be also correct. So what is the significance of this? And there are so many other relations like this. What is this about?

If you would like to explain why the first one is true to some of the board members, you have a challenge before you!

But, that and the square of the matrix are in the signature, which is appended automagically to every post, they are not the post contents. As grapes points out, they are (the first one in particular) a bit of an inside joke.
