Thread: what does it mean to be alive?

Thanks Mr. Tomes for that input, I found it interesting and thought provoking. Though I have often postulated the "soul", "life force" or "source of animation" as being possibly nothing more than a specific cohesion of energy forces tied to a physical form, changing and evolving as what we call "mind", I must admit that there is a part of me that wonders if some part of that "mind" exists once the body is gone. This is where I start getting into where time plays it's part. I watch an old video recording of my younger days and wonder, "Is this my so called 'spirit'...?" I am, I was, I will be...Will I still be or be again once this body is gone or will I only be a memory travelling through space on the waves of electromagnetic energy or stored in such recording devices? Can consciousness as we know it exist beyond a physical form? I don't know of anyone who can or ever will be able to prove that one. I may have certain beliefs, but I cannot say that I know.

We don't know exactly what mind is. Modern science often uses the terms mind and brain interchangeably, but that is certainly an error. Mind is present throughout the nervous system and indeed the entire body. I know that from my own experience. As to what happens at death, we don't know. The Buddha says that one part of the mind goes to a rebirth, the reacting part of the mind which is called sankhara in pali. LINK: Sa
The Buddha also says that there are other planes of beings, many without physical bodies (they have subtle bodies though). He also says not to believe things that we do not know with our own experience. :-)

So we agree. We cannot say that we know.
