Neither the internet, which I did use in the late eighties, nor the DARPANET, which I used in the early eighties, is the world wide web. The www was created in 1991, they set out to make a browser.

I remember running a BBS (bulletin board) on my Commodore 64 in 1983. I thought it was the sh**. I had my own web page with my own artwork(320x240 bitmaps), downloadable (pirated) games, and an opportunity for people to choke down my opinionated, 12-year old attitude about things.
People had to literally dial in to my computer to connect. (anyone here old enough to remember modems?!?)
I had to take my service down to play on my computer or dial in to others' BBS's.
I remember my mom getting really mad that our phone was tied up all the time.
AOL was already up by 1987, thinking they had control. Ya, it's made some progress.

There is a remote tribe out there that worships the number zero. Is nothing sacred???
It was fun! But it wasn't a "web page" it was just a display. What was different about the WWW and why the term "web" came into it was the introduction of active links that could be clicked. Hence it was called "browsing" or "surfing". I also used bulletin board systems as well as usenet (discussion groups on thousands of topics) and of course email before www started. In the late 1980s we used to dial into a USA system every day (from NZ) to get latest prices of commodities etc.
