Hi All! I haven't been posting here for a year or two now, but you know how circumstances change. My wife and I now have a 5 month old son, and this has got me thinking. I've always meant to buy myself a decent telescope, with the idea of lighting that spark in any kids I might have. Now that I have one, I'm going to do it. Dropped in to York Optical in Melbourne the other week and had a chat with the guy there. I'd like something that will be good for all round - see some bands on Jupiter, the Cassini division, and be ok for some deep space objects, and spending around AU$1000, maybe a little more. He suggested this one... (http://www.yorkoptical.com.au/Home/t...7/Default.aspx) A 10" Dobsonian. I was thinking of a Dob, just because it'll be the most telescope for my money, and I'm not worried about photography or anything needing an equatorial mount. Australian Sky and Telescope magazine this month have a review of its bigger brother (http://www.yorkoptical.com.au/Produc...ee3%2cUnitCost) which is pretty positive. My problem is, while they look good, does anyone know if there are good value? And is the extra 2 inches worth paying the extra for? I'm wanting this to last me for a long time - I probably won't be getting another telescope unless this one gets broken! Any advice?
