I searched the site for references to this announcement, or even to the scop itself. But only came up with a previous discussion from 2003 (http://www.bautforum.com/astronomy/1...next-step.html) when this was a gleam in the designer's eyes. A short local story mention, so it's not that detailed.World's Largest Telescope To Be Built In Hawaii (http://www.newsnet5.com/news/20133184/detail.html)They do mention other larger efforts. But, twice they mention:---Quote--- a device so powerful that it will allow scientists to see some 13 billion light years away---End Quote--- A few other good ones.---Quote--- but the size of their diameters are about three times smaller---End Quote---Ok; I can almost forgive "3 times smaller" but "size of the diameter"? I wonder what the tallness height of its height is. I can understand some of the controversy with the religious aspects of Mauna Kea, but...---Quote--- environmentalists oppose the telescope on the grounds it would hurt some endangered species.---End Quote---Explain please.
