Default What is "the truth" about who invented the telescope?

I'd like to find my own resource online but everytime I do i get different answers. To me, if I invent a device called XYZ, then invented it. but was does invention entail? in⋅vent  /ɪnˈvɛnt/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [in-vent] Show IPAUse invent in a Sentence–verb (used with object)1. to originate or create as a product of one's own ingenuity, experimentation, or contrivance: to invent the telegraph.2. to produce or create with the imagination: to invent a story.3. to make up or fabricate (something fictitious or false): to invent excuses.4. Archaic. to come upon; find.So it seems invention means to create something from imagination. So my question still stands, who "really" "invented" the first telescope? (something tells me this question is deeper than it even seems due to the different types of telescopes out there).

There was an artcle in a recent issue of Sky and Telescope about that ... If only I'd read it. I'll read it tonight.
