Default Why Jupiter?

It just hit me: Jupiter is aptly named after the chief of the Roman pantheon because it is the largest planet - but how did the Romans know that? Why didn't they call the brightest planet in the sky, Venus, after the chief of gods? Or at least name her after Hera instead of after a (still quite important, but not highly ranked) love goddess? Now that's a base for a conspiracy theory if I ever saw one... anyone want to tip off Dan Brown? ;)
