    Default Hubble Ultra Deep Field: Just HOW big our universe really is!

    This pictorial comparison depicts our solar system and our Sun alongside other, far larger and well-known stars. In addition, it includes images from the Hubble Ultra Deep Field experiment conducted in the Fall of 2003. The Hubble images show young galaxies 13 billion light-years distant!

    Enjoy! As always, questions and comments are most welcome.

    As for those whose curiosities fall along more fanciful lines, I suggest it's because they have more money than they know what to do with while not having had enough science and engineering to know what they're dealing with.

    Very interesting...regarding the photo second from the bottom on the right...either 'our' physics theories are wrong <aka incomplete> or that galaxy does not exist but since we have a picture of it (assuming, of course, that it wasn't photoshopped) then perhaps the BB isn't exactly what we thought it was/is but then....ouch, my head is beginning to hurt, it's time for another cup of coffee and a relaxing session of Through the Wormhole.....

    Drink it fast and then come on back and explain what the heck you're talking about and how you managed to reach that conclusion.

    But between the two, go pee before you start typing.

    Hmmm...pea...a green vegatable that is somewhat nutrition and has no relationship with my cof....what? it's not about pea but rather pee....ohhhh, nevermind....

    It was my (rather sad) attempt at humor. Taking the caption of the photo, it is obvious that "current physics theories" need tweaking....at least a tiny bit.

    Well, 8x the stars of the Milky Way doesn't seem like much of a stretch. "Typical galaxies range from dwarfs with as few as ten million (107) stars,[3] up to giants with a hundred trillion (1E14) stars." - Source The Milky Way contains between 200 and 400 Billion stars, so the "giant" galaxies contain approximately 333 times as many stars as the Milky Way.

    That's quite a bit more times that "8," so I'm thinking whoever penned the caption on that photograph wasn't as well versed in astrophysics as he though he was.

    ::: WARNING : IM GOING TO BANTER:::

    that can't be all just hydrogen. I wonder how many precious metals from asteroids hit a star that big daily. Do Stars that big have an "event horizon" of sorts because their gravity has to be like exponentially larger their our owns? And I wonder how accurate those colors are if you were in a space ship, or what color they would appear like through the atmosphere of a planet nearby.

    :: SORRY, I WARNED YOU ::

    Where did you get that graphic, mugs? I see it's in your photobucket, and the little address at the bottom ("www.jj.am" animated gifs?) doesn't seem to be any help.

    While we're waiting for mugs, it looks to me like a partial address: "www.JJ_AM"??? ...but then my eyesight is not what it use to be....

    Nudge, nudge...re-read the caption: it doesn't say 'this giant galaxy...' it says 'large' which would be considerable smaller than a giant galaxy. I'm more concerned about his saying that it shouldn't exist. If a galaxy only 8 times bigger than the Milky Way shouldn't exist, I wonder what he thinks about truly giant galaxies....
